22 Momme Silk vs Regular Silk: What Is the Difference?

22 Momme Silk vs Regular Silk: What Is the Difference?

When it comes to silk, not all fabrics are equal. If you have ever wondered why some silk products feel dramatically more luxurious than others — or why they last significantly longer — the answer almost always comes down to one number: momme weight.

What Is Momme Weight?

Momme (pronounced moh-mee, abbreviated mm) is a Japanese unit used to measure the weight of silk fabric. Specifically, it describes the weight in pounds of a piece of silk measuring 45 inches wide by 100 yards long. The higher the momme count, the more silk threads are packed per square inch — and the denser, more durable, and more lustrous the fabric becomes.

Comparing the Grades

  • 6-12 momme: Lightweight, sheer. Used for linings and scarves. Tears easily.
  • 16 momme: The most common grade for pillowcases and basic eye masks. Acceptable quality but shows wear quickly.
  • 19 momme: Mid-range. Better durability and a smoother feel. Common in mid-tier luxury goods.
  • 22 momme: The sweet spot of luxury and longevity. Noticeably heavier, more opaque, and significantly smoother. Maintains its properties through repeated washing.
  • 25+ momme: Extremely dense, used in high-end garments. Heavier than necessary for sleep products and less breathable.

Why 22 Momme for Sleep Products?

22-momme hits the ideal balance for products worn against sensitive skin during sleep. It is dense enough to be fully opaque (critical for light blocking), heavy enough to feel substantial and luxurious, and smooth enough to reduce friction on skin and hair — helping prevent sleep wrinkles and hair breakage over time.

At Velnox, we exclusively use Grade 6A, 22-momme Mulberry Silk — the highest grade of silk available, produced from single silkworm cocoons for maximum filament consistency and the smoothest possible surface.

The Practical Test

Run your fingernail lightly across a piece of 16-momme silk, then across 22-momme. The 22-momme will feel more resistant — more substance, more silk. That substance is what stands between your skin and friction night after night, year after year.

When you invest in 22-momme, you are not paying for a brand — you are paying for more silk, scientifically.
